The Wonder of Portonovo

A renowned and beloved tourist destination, the Bay of Portonovo is nestled in beautiful views of unspoiled nature, lying within the Conero Regional Park in a still intact natural setting, where the Mediterranean scrub reaches the crystal-clear waters of the sea.

The beach, formed from a landslide that detached from the mountain in Pian Grande area in ancient times, shines with the white Conero stone pebbles, smoothed by the waves.

Two brackish lakes, rich in legends, enhance this unique environment, which has partly become a natural reserve. The charming and must-visit S. Maria Church, an 11th-century Romanesque masterpiece, is also located here. Along the bay’s beaches, once a landing point and prey for Turkish ships, stand the 18th-century Guard Tower built as a defense against pirates, the Napoleonic Fortino, a military bastion now converted into a hotel, and the De Bosis Tower, built in 1716 by order of Pope Clement XI Albani.

The Conero Regional Natural Park includes a stretch of high coastline and a wide inland hilly area, with splendid panoramic views and rich history, covering a total area of about 6000 hectares, within the territories of Ancona, Camerano, Numana, and Sirolo.
